C&C scoops Growing Localities Award

C&C enjoyed a brilliant awards victory on 11th April, as one of its Arts & Education activities triumphed at the City of London's Growing Localities awards.

The ‘Growing Together gardening group’ was the winner in the ‘Nature-themed arts and crafts’ category of the awards, which offer funding for London-based projects that improve local communities and, in particular, the lives of vulnerable people.

The gardening project was run at Cecil Court care home in Kew. During the project, a group of residents worked together on a number of different gardening activities, including making Christmas wreaths and decorations, flower arranging, garden related story telling and poems, and making homes for insects and birds.

The project had a great number of positive outcomes, which were recognised by the awards body and contributed to C&C’s success on the night. Throughout 'Growing Together', the sessions really brought out the creative sides in all the participants, who used skills they had learnt from their lives and professions before they came to the homes. Everyone involved invested so much care in the project that they even began to regularly check on their plants everyday, deheading flowers and checking they had enough water. The sessions provided a regular social activity which can often mean so much for people living in care, whether sharing ideas, complimenting each other's work or just having a chat. Most of all, there was a real feeling of taking ownership of the communal garden, getting outside and enjoying the fresh air.

The 'Growing Together gardening group' was awarded at a dazzling ceremony at London's famous Barbican art centre. As part of the award, C&C's Arts & Education team has been awarded £1,000, which it will use to further develop exciting gardening-related activities for their residents.

Speaking after the ceremony, C&C's Arts & Education coordinator, Alison Teader, said, “We are all so happy to have won the award. Everyone involved in ‘Growing Together’ has a real sense of pride and achievement in the work they created during the project, and to be recognized in this way only enhances this wonderful feeling.”
