Scheme offers new hope for over 55s in finding their own home
With many Londoners being faced with increasing market rents and long council waiting lists, Central and Cecil Housing Trust (C&C) has launched 55 London - a new initiative that offers truly affordable rent to Londoners aged over 55.
Aimed at those who are unlikely to benefit from social housing such as keyworkers, 55 London offers significantly more affordable rent than both the market rate and even intermediate rent. The scheme is already improving the lives of individuals such as Paul, who lost his home after being impacted by the financial crisis. With both this and high market rents, Paul house-shared for many years until 55 London gave him a home to call his own – at the Oldfield Estate in Camden.
Paul, 60, said: “I would highly recommend someone to move to a 55 London home. There are really good facilities here and my flat gives me the privacy that I didn’t have before.”
Antonio, 61, is another new 55 London resident who was previously living in a shared house with six others and was on a local housing waiting list for months until he learnt about 55 London. Antonio said: “55 London has made a huge difference to my life; I now have my own flat and no longer have to share with others.”
Julia Ashley, C&C Chief Executive, added: “As a proud provider of London social housing for over 90 years, we recognise the growing need to create more opportunities for those aged over 55 who find themselves caught in the middle of the London housing system and unable to receive social housing or afford typical London rents. 55 London offers these individuals fresh hope, providing them the possibility of their own home.”
55 London is now open to new resident applications. Properties are available in prime locations such as Camden, Ealing and Kingston and require no deposit.
