Top tips to keep your home ventilated and moisture free this winter

Winter can make it challenging to keep your home well-ventilated and to dry your washing effectively inside. However, with a few small hints and tips you can still keep your home ventilated to eliminate any build up of moisture or condensation and get your washing dry effectively.
Ventilating your home
- Use your extractor fans in the kitchen and bathroom to help remove moisture especially when cooking and showering.
- Open your windows regularly, even in winter, it’s important to open them for short periods of time to allow fresh air to circulate. Aim for around 10 minutes a day.
- Utilise the trickle vents in your windows if you have them. These are the small slots at the top of the window, keeping them open enables a constant flow of fresh air without causing a drop in temperature.
- Keep any air vents and radiators clear of blockages to maintain air and heat flow.
Drying clothes indoors
- Where possible avoid putting damp clothes directly onto radiators as this can reduce their efficiency and increase humidity levels in your home which can lead to damp and condensation.
- Use a drying rack to spread clothes out and place in front of your radiator or in a warmer room
- Open windows slightly or use a fan to help circulate air whilst clothes are drying and reduce humidity.
You can also use a dehumidifier if you have one, which helps to remove excess moisture in the air and can help to dry your clothes too.
We strongly recommend not using indoor portable propane gas heaters and camping gas heaters in your home. They are extremely dangerous and not safe to be left unattended or operating overnight.
